Part of the build quality problem I mentioned yesterday had to do with the fact that changes are getting promoted to our test and production environments that aren't supposed to be. Our source control system is based in ClearCase, and we are using UCM. We have our projects set up where there is a stream that cooresponds loosely to the code that is in productions, and then we have developer streams under that stream. If there is a feature/enhancement, then we create streams for those features/enhancements under the main stream, and then developers join under that feature stream to work on it. What happens is that developers sometimes make fixes in the feature streams, instead of the top level streams, and thereby tie thier fixes to feature code that isn't really ready to go up. To prevent this from happening in the future, the project manager for that team wants to prevent developers from creating thier own activities, and she is intituting a policy of more thorough c
Another hectic day today. I had to fight with ClearCase this morning for a few people. One of my co-worker's laptops had the wrong domain in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Atria\ClearCase\CurrentVersion\ClearCaseGroupName entry in the registry and the Atria Location Broker was using the wrong login as well. I don't know why this happens, but these settings seem to keep getting reset to point to our old domain. One of these days I'll figure out why. We talked to the team working with DataStage to consolidate some files here about some problems they were having when trying to call out to some stored procedures to validate some VINs for vehicles we have in our system. This call is slowing down the DataStage transfer jobs to something like 25 rows per which is pretty slow for our needs. The stored procedure interfaces with a piece of software on our iSeries called VINA provided by Polk Software. This program seems very ineffecient according to my boss, so we sugges
Alright. I've got to get better at posting to this thang! There's so much that has happened that I don't think I could list it all. I'm just going to start in and explain things as I post them here. Right now I'm under a lot of stress at work (who isn't, right?). Many of my workgroup and myself included often have to work more than 40 hour weeks just to stay on top of our day-to-day issues. This is starting to affect my personal life since I can't be at home as much as I'd like to. Currently, I'm trying to get all of my co-workers to help track all of the projects that we just haven't had time to get to but know that we need to get to. Hopefully, we'll be able to collect enough of these items to justify getting some new people. It's going to be tough, however, because that will more than likely mean that we'll need to get rid of some of our other people to do it. I had a question come in from a co-worker about using GPS
